The seeds of the Steppe rue (Peganum harmala) have been known for centuries for their many uses. They are traditionally valued in various cultures and are particularly interesting for their essential oils and alkaloids. This hardy plant thrives particularly well in dry and warm areas, but can also be cultivated with a little care in the home garden or greenhouse.

Sowing instructions

In order for the seeds of Peganum harmala to germinate successfully, you should pay attention to a few important points:

• Location: The plant prefers a warm, sunny spot with well-drained soil. A sandy or gravelly substrate is ideal.
• Sowing time: The best time for sowing is in Spring or early summerwhen temperatures are constantly above 20 °C.
• Germination: The seeds need plenty of light to germinate. Therefore, sprinkle them only lightly on the soil and press them down carefully without covering them completely.
• Irrigation: Keep the substrate moist, but not too wet. Waterlogging can damage the seedlings.
• Growth: The first seedlings will appear after about 2-3 weeks. As soon as they are strong enough, they can be transplanted into larger pots or into the open ground.

Harvest, use & storage

The seeds can be harvested as soon as the Seed pods brown and dry are. Carefully cut off the pods and leave them to dry in an airy place. You can then open them and remove the seeds.

To store the seeds Dry, dark and airtight so that they remain durable for a long time.

Tips and tricks

• Peganum harmala also grows well in dry soils, but requires occasional watering for optimum growth.
• The plant can be perennial if it is wintered frost-free will.
• If you want the seeds to germinate more quickly, you can sow them before sowing for Soak in warm water for 24 hours.
