The Field maple (Acer campestre) is a native, hardy deciduous tree that is characterized by its dense, compact growth and bright yellow autumn colouring. It is ideal for gardens, parks and as a hedge plant. Due to its robustness and adaptability, it is often used in near-natural gardens and for the ecological enhancement of landscapes.

Sowing instructions

The seeds of Acer campestre require a cold period (stratification) in order to germinate successfully.

Sowing time: Fall to spring
Germination period: 3-12 months (depending on stratification)
Seeding depth: Place 1-2 cm in loose, humus-rich soil
Planting distance: At least 1-2 meters for single plants, denser for hedges
Location: Sunny to semi-shady, tolerates dry and moist soils
Pouring: Moderate, initially keep moist, later very drought-resistant
For better germination, use the seeds for 8-12 weeks at 2-5 °C stratify in the refrigerator or outside in damp sand.

Harvest, use & storage

Acer campestre is an easy-care plant with many possible uses.

Flowering time: April to May (inconspicuous, greenish-yellow flowers)
Autumn coloring: Intense yellow to golden brown
Use: Solitary tree, hedge plant, bee pasture
Storage: Keep seeds in a dry and dark place, store in a cool place until sowing
The seeds ripen in the Autumn and can be sown directly in the field or stored for later sowing.
