Sowing instructions
- Choose the right location: Fragaria prefers a sunny location with well-drained soil. Make sure the soil is rich in organic matter and provides good drainage to prevent waterlogging.
- Soil preparation: Loosen the soil thoroughly and remove weeds and large stones. Improve the soil by adding compost or rotted manure to increase the nutrient supply.
- Seed procurement: Obtain high-quality Fragaria seeds from a trustworthy source. Make sure to choose fresh seeds to ensure good germination.
- Sowing time: The best times for sowing Fragaria seeds are in spring or fall. Sow the seeds about 0.5 to 1 centimeter deep in the prepared soil and keep it evenly moist.
- Germination and care: Fragaria seeds can take a few weeks to germinate. Keep the seedlings moist and thin them out if necessary to prevent overcrowding. As soon as the seedlings become stronger, you can carefully transplant them to provide enough space for them to grow.
Tips and tricks
- Regular watering: Fragaria plants need regular watering, especially during fruit development. Make sure to keep the soil evenly moist, but avoid overwatering as this can lead to rotting.
- Mulching: Mulch the soil around the Fragaria plants with straw, leaves or grass clippings to retain moisture, suppress weed growth and keep the fruit clean.
- Protection against pests: Fragaria plants are susceptible to pests such as slugs, birds and rodents. Use physical barriers such as netting or fencing to protect your plants, or use environmentally friendly pest control methods to keep pests out.
Worth knowing
- Fragaria is a genus of plants in the rose family (Rosaceae) that produces strawberries. Strawberries are rich in vitamin C, fiber and antioxidants and are considered a healthy snack option.
- There are different varieties of Fragaria, including those that can be grown both in the garden and in pots. Choose the variety that best suits your growing conditions and preferences.
- Strawberries can be eaten fresh, made into jam, juice or desserts or frozen to extend their shelf life. Harvest the strawberries as soon as they are ripe by carefully cutting them off the stem so as not to damage the plants.
