Sowing instructions:
The best time to sow your Salvia officinalis 'Albiflora' seeds is in early spring, when temperatures are mild and there is no longer any risk of frost. Here are the steps to sowing successfully:
- Site selection: Choose a sunny location for your sage plants. Sage thrives best in a location with at least six hours of direct sunlight per day.
- Soil preparation: Loosen the soil well and remove weeds and stones. Sage prefers a well-drained soil with a slightly alkaline pH value.
- Sowing: Scatter the Salvia officinalis 'Albiflora' seeds evenly over the prepared area and cover lightly with a thin layer of soil. Press the soil down gently to ensure that the seeds have good soil contact.
- Irrigation: Keep the soil evenly moist during germination by watering regularly but carefully. Avoid overwatering, however, as this can lead to rotting.
Tips and tricks:
- Regular harvest: Harvest the leaves regularly to stimulate the growth of new shoots and keep the plant compact. Harvesting sage leaves also promotes better branching and more lush growth.
- Protection from overwintering: In colder regions, covering the plants with straw or leaves in the fall can help protect them from frost damage.
- Drying and storage: Dry the harvested sage leaves in a warm, well-ventilated place and then store them in airtight containers in a cool, dark place to preserve their aroma and freshness.
Worth knowing:
- Salvia officinalis 'Albiflora' is a white-flowering variant of the classic garden sage. Its delicate, white flowers add an extra aesthetic dimension to your garden.
- Sage is not only a popular culinary plant, but is also valued for its medicinal properties. The leaves contain essential oils with anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties.
- This variety is also an excellent bee and butterfly plant and helps to promote pollination in your garden.
