Sowing instructions: Sowing Daucus carota ssp. carota, better known as wild carrot, is very easy. Start in spring when the soil is frost-free and has warmed up to around 10°C. Choose a sunny location with well-drained, slightly sandy soil. Prepare the seedbed by thoroughly digging it up and clearing it of weeds. Sow the seeds in rows about 30 cm apart and cover them lightly with soil, about 1 cm deep. Keep the soil evenly moist until the seedlings appear, which usually takes 10-20 days. Thin the seedlings to 5-10 cm apart as soon as they are strong enough to make room for healthy growth.

Tips and tricks: To achieve the best yield, you should loosen the soil regularly so that the roots can penetrate well. Mulching helps to retain moisture and reduce the growth of weeds. Be sure to water the plants regularly, especially during dry periods, as uneven watering can lead to deformed roots. A little patience is required, as the wild carrot takes around 90 to 120 days to harvest. If you allow the plants to flower, you will also attract beneficial insects such as bees and butterflies, which will enrich your garden.

Worth knowing: Daucus carota ssp. carota is not only a plant with culinary value, but also has a long history in natural medicine. The roots and seeds have traditionally been used to treat various ailments, including digestive disorders and skin problems. The leaves of the plant are also edible and can be used in salads or as a garnish. Did you know that the wild carrot is also the ancestor of today's cultivated carrots? Its delicate, white flowers, which appear in the second year, are a real eye-catcher and also look good in wildflower bouquets.
