Sowing instructions

Eruca vesicaria ssp. sativa, better known as salad rocket or arugula, is an undemanding and fast-growing plant. You can grow it both in the garden and in a pot on the balcony or windowsill. Sow the seeds directly outdoors or under glass from April to September to enable an earlier harvest. The sowing depth should be around 1 cm and the distance between the rows around 15-20 cm. Water the seeds well after sowing and always keep the soil moist, but not too wet. The first seedlings will start to sprout after about 7-14 days.

Tips and tricks

To ensure a continuous harvest, reseed every two to three weeks. Rocket loves sunny to semi-shady locations and thrives best in humus-rich, well-drained soil. Make sure to water regularly, especially in dry weather. A layer of mulch can help to retain moisture in the soil and reduce weed growth. As rocket is a rather short-lived plant, you can harvest the leaves after about 4-6 weeks. Cut off the outer leaves and leave the heart of the plant intact to encourage new growth.

Eruca vesicaria ssp. sativa belongs to the cruciferous family and is known for its spicy, slightly pungent taste, which is reminiscent of mustard and walnuts. Originally from the Mediterranean region, the plant is now very popular all over the world. Rocket is not only delicious, but also very healthy: it is rich in vitamins A, C and K as well as minerals such as calcium, potassium and iron. In addition, rocket contains secondary plant substances that have an antioxidant effect and can strengthen the immune system. Use the fresh leaves in salads, on pizza, in pestos or as an aromatic addition to many other dishes.
