Sowing instructions

To successfully grow Ocimum basilicum "Genovese", start sowing in early spring. Fill small pots or seed containers with high-quality potting compost and sow the seeds thinly. Cover the seeds only lightly with soil, as basil is a light germinator. Place the containers in a warm, bright place and keep the soil evenly moist, but not wet. The first seedlings should appear after about 7-14 days. When the seedlings are about 5 cm high, you can prick them out and transfer them to larger pots or to the open ground as soon as there is no longer any danger of frost.

Tips and tricks

Basil loves sunny, warm locations and well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. Water regularly, but avoid waterlogging. To encourage bushy plants, pinch out the shoot tips regularly. This stimulates the growth of new side shoots and prevents premature flowering. Make sure to harvest the leaves in the morning when the essential oil content is at its highest. Basil is an annual, so you should keep sowing new seeds to ensure a continuous harvest.

Ocimum basilicum "Genovese" is the classic variety for pesto and is known for its intense, aromatic flavor. The plant reaches a height of around 30-60 cm and forms glossy, dark green leaves.
