Sowing instructions

To successfully grow Papaver somniferum "Hens and Chicks", start sowing in spring as soon as there is no longer any risk of frost. Sprinkle the seeds directly onto the surface of a well-drained, slightly chalky soil and press them down lightly. As this poppy variety is a light germinator, do not cover the seeds with soil. Keep the soil evenly moist during the germination phase, which lasts around 10 to 14 days. The optimum germination temperature is between 15 and 20°C. Ensure that the plants have enough space to grow by spacing the seedlings 20-30 cm apart.

Tips and tricks

Choose a sunny location for the "Hens and Chicks" plants to fully develop their flowering splendor. Sowing too densely can lead to weak plants, so it is particularly important to separate the seedlings. To prolong the flowering period, remove faded flowers regularly. This poppy variety is easy to care for, but requires additional watering during longer dry periods. Avoid waterlogging as this can damage the roots. Light fertilization in spring promotes growth and flower formation.

Papaver somniferum "Hens and Chicks" is characterized by its striking flower shape, which is reminiscent of hens with chicks. The flowers vary in color from white to pink to purple. This annual plant reaches a height of up to 90 cm and is ideal for flower beds and cottage gardens. It attracts bees and other pollinators, making it a valuable addition to semi-natural gardens.
