Sowing instructions

Lobelia siphilitica, also known as blue lobelia, is a magnificent perennial that can light up your garden in bright blue. To cultivate the seeds successfully, start in spring as soon as there is no longer any risk of frost. The seeds should be sown directly on the surface of moist, well-drained soil and only lightly pressed down, as they need light to germinate. A germination period of 2 to 4 weeks can be expected. Keep the soil moist at all times during this time, but avoid waterlogging.

Tips and tricks

For lush flowering, you should plant Lobelia siphilitica in a sunny to semi-shady location. This plant prefers nutrient-rich, moist soil, so regular watering is particularly important during dry periods. Once established, however, the blue lobelia can also survive short periods of drought. For particularly abundant flowering, you can regularly feed the plant with a phosphorus-rich fertilizer. Another tip: remove faded inflorescences to encourage the formation of new flowers and keep the plant vital.

Worth knowing

The blue lobelia is originally from North America and is known for its striking blue flowers, which attract bees, butterflies and other pollinators. It reaches a height of around 60 to 90 cm and flowers from July to September. Lobelia siphilitica was once used as a medicinal plant, particularly in the treatment of syphilis, which earned it the name "siphilitica". Nowadays, however, it is valued above all for its aesthetic qualities and its ability to enliven wetlands in gardens.
