Sowing instructions

The cultivation of Angelica dahurica, also known as Bai Zhi, begins with sowing the seeds. Start in early spring, as the seeds need a cold period to germinate. Scatter the seeds thinly on the surface of well-drained, moist soil in seed trays or directly in the open ground. Press the seeds lightly but do not cover them as they need light to germinate. Keep the soil constantly moist, but not wet. Germination usually takes place within 2 to 4 weeks at temperatures between 15 and 20 degrees Celsius.

Tips and tricks

1. Pre-treatment of the seedsFor a better germination rate, you can soak the seeds in water for 24 hours before sowing.
2. Choice of locationChoose a sunny to semi-shady location with well-drained soil. Angelica dahurica prefers nutrient-rich, humus-rich soil.
3. CareKeep the soil moist at all times, but avoid waterlogging. A layer of mulch can help to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.
4. FertilizationFertilize the plants in spring with an organic fertilizer to promote growth.
5. Pest controlWatch out for slugs and aphids. Natural pest control methods such as beneficial insects or neem oil can be helpful.

Angelica dahurica is a perennial plant that is not only valued for its medicinal properties, but is also an attractive garden plant. The plant can grow up to 1.5 meters tall and produces beautiful white umbel flowers in its second year. Its roots are used in traditional Chinese medicine and are known for their anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties. Harvest the roots in the fall of the second year, when the plant begins to die back. Dry the roots thoroughly before storing or processing them.
