Sowing instructions

Salvia pachyphylla, also known as mountain desert sage, is best sown in spring. The seeds should be embedded in well-drained, sandy soil. Cover the seeds only lightly with substrate, as they are light germinators. For optimum germination conditions, it is advisable to keep the soil constantly moist, but not wet. Place the seed container in a sunny, warm place - temperatures between 18 and 22 degrees Celsius are ideal. You can expect to see the first seedlings after around 14 to 21 days.

Harvest, use & storage

Salvia pachyphylla develops beautiful violet-blue flowers and silvery leaves that are not only decorative but can also be used in a variety of ways. The leaves and flowers are ideal as dried herbs for tea or incense. It is best to cut the plant in the morning when the concentration of essential oils is at its highest. To preserve the herbs, dry them in a shady, airy place. As soon as the leaves crackle, you can store them in an airtight container to preserve their aromas for months.

Tips & Tricks

Salvia pachyphylla loves sunny locations and is extremely drought-tolerant - perfect for rock gardens or Mediterranean beds. If you live in a region with cooler winters, protect the plant in winter with a light layer of mulch or overwinter it in a frost-free room. Be careful not to over-fertilize the plant - it prefers nutrient-poor soil and does well without much care. Another advantage: Salvia pachyphylla is an excellent bee and butterfly pasture!

Salvia pachyphylla originally comes from the mountainous desert regions of California and Mexico. There it can withstand extreme conditions such as long periods of drought and strong temperature fluctuations. The plant is therefore very robust and easy to care for. It also contains essential oils that not only spread a wonderful fragrance, but also act as a natural defense against pests. A real highlight for your garden that requires little work and gives a lot of pleasure.
