Sowing instructions
If you want to plant Solanum lycopersicum "Alka" seeds, it is best to start sowing in February or March. The seeds are placed in nutrient-poor potting compost and lightly covered with soil. Make sure that the germination temperature is around 20-25 °C - the seeds thrive best in a bright and warm place, such as a windowsill or in a heated greenhouse. Always keep the soil slightly moist, but avoid waterlogging. The first seedlings will appear after approx. 7-14 days. As soon as the seedlings have 2-4 leaves, you should prick them out into individual pots. After the Ice Saints, the young plants can be transplanted outdoors or into larger pots.
Harvest, use & storage
The tomatoes of the "Alka" variety are red, medium-sized and have a sweet, fruity taste. Harvesting begins in July and can continue into the fall. You can recognize ripe tomatoes by their deep red color and slight yielding to pressure. Alka tomatoes are perfect for fresh consumption, but also for sauces, salads or as a topping for pizza and pasta. Once harvested, the tomatoes are best stored in the fridge, but should be consumed within a few days as they quickly lose their flavor.
Tips & Tricks
To ensure that your tomato plants grow particularly lush, it is important to regularly pinch out - this means removing the small shoots in the leaf axils. This strengthens the main growth of the plant. Tomatoes also benefit from regular fertilization, preferably every 2-3 weeks with a tomato fertilizer. Avoid watering the leaves to prevent diseases and prefer drip irrigation directly at the root.
Worth knowing
The "Alka" tomato variety is a particularly high-yielding vine tomato and is highly resistant to diseases. Thanks to its robust nature, it is also suitable for growing outdoors and in greenhouses. Did you know that tomatoes originally come from South America? Today they are one of the most popular vegetables in the world and enrich every kitchen.
