Origin: Spain

Germination period: approx. 1-4 weeks

Sowing instructions

Hylocereus undatus "Roja" seeds are the basis for one of the most delicious and exotic fruits in the world - the dragon fruit. To successfully germinate these seeds, you should follow these steps:

  1. Sowing time: It is best to plant the seeds in spring or summer when the temperatures are constantly warm (approx. 20-30°C).
  2. Floor: Use a well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral soil. A mixture of cactus or cactus soil is ideal.
  3. Sowing: Sprinkle the seeds thinly on the surface of the soil and press them down lightly. Only cover them with a thin layer of soil, as they need light to germinate.
  4. Pouring: Keep the soil evenly moist, but avoid waterlogging. It is best to use a spray bottle to gently moisten the seeds.
  5. Temperature: A warm environment promotes germination. Keep the seeds at around 25-30°C and make sure that they are not exposed to direct sunlight, as this can have a negative effect on germination.

Harvest, use & storage

After sowing, you can expect the first growth after just a few months. The dragon fruit plant grows quickly and can become fruit-bearing plants within 1-2 years. When the fruit is completely red and the skin is soft to the touch, it is ready to harvest.

  • Use: Dragon fruit is ideal as a fresh snack, for smoothies or in fruit salads. Its mildly sweet taste and delicate texture make it a healthy treat.
  • Storage: To keep the fruit fresh, store it in the fridge. It will remain edible there for up to a week. For longer storage, you can also freeze the fruit and use it later.

Tips and tricks

  • Care: The dragon fruit plant is a type of cactus and therefore does not require much care. Make sure it gets enough sunlight, but without direct, hot sun.
  • Irrigation: Watering once a week is sufficient as long as the soil does not get too wet. You can also keep the plant in a clay pot to ensure good air circulation.
  • Climbing aid: As Hylocereus is a climbing plant, you should provide it with a climbing support so that it can develop optimally.

Worth knowing

Hylocereus undatus "Roja" is one of the best-known dragon fruit varieties and is characterized by its bright red skin and red flesh with black seeds. It is not only a treat for the palate, but also a real eye-catcher in any garden or on the balcony. The cactus is not hardy and should be brought indoors in winter in colder regions or kept as a houseplant.
