Sowing instructions

If you want to grow Achillea ptarmica, also known as marsh yarrow, successfully, it is best to start sowing in spring. The seeds should be sown thinly on the surface of moist, well-drained soil. Cover them only lightly with soil, as they need light to germinate. Keep the soil evenly moist, but not wet. At an optimum germination temperature of 18-20°C, the seeds will germinate in around 14-21 days. After germination, you can transplant the plants at intervals of 30 cm to give them enough space to grow.

Tips and tricks

Achillea ptarmica prefers a sunny location, but can also thrive in light partial shade. The plant is relatively undemanding and can cope with different types of soil, but prefers moist, humus-rich soil. To promote abundant flowering, you can fertilize it regularly. Pruning after the first flowering in summer encourages a second flowering in the fall. Cut back the faded inflorescences to encourage the plant to produce new flowers and maintain a neat appearance.

Worth knowing

The marsh yarrow is not only popular because of its attractive white flowers, but also because of its robust nature. It is hardy and can survive temperatures down to -30°C. The plant is native to Europe and western Asia and is now often used in herbaceous borders or as a cut flower. The plant also has historical medicinal uses, for example as a remedy for colds and stomach complaints. Note that Achillea ptarmica can be slightly invasive, so keep it in check to avoid uncontrolled spread.
