Sowing instructions

Alchemilla alpina, also known as Alpine lady's mantle, is an enchanting plant that beautifies alpine gardens with its silvery-green leaves and delicate, yellow-green flowers. To grow this perennial from seed, it is best to start sowing in spring or fall. Scatter the seeds on the surface of a well-drained, slightly sandy substrate and press them down gently. A thin layer of sand as a cover is sufficient, as the seeds need light to germinate. Keep the substrate evenly moist, but avoid waterlogging, which could damage the seeds. Germination usually takes place within 2 to 4 weeks at temperatures between 15 and 20 degrees Celsius.

Tips and tricks

A cool location is ideal for the successful cultivation of Alchemilla alpina. A spot in partial shade, where the plant is protected from the intense midday sun, is particularly suitable. If you store the seeds in the refrigerator for around two weeks before sowing, this can improve the germination rate. This so-called cold stratification simulates natural winter conditions and breaks seed dormancy. During the growth phase, you can support the plant with a balanced fertilizer, but be careful not to over-fertilize it, as this could lead to unnaturally rapid growth.

Alchemilla alpina is not only popular for its aesthetic qualities, but is also known for its nurturing properties. The leaves contain tannins and essential oils, which are used in folk medicine for skin care. In nature, the plant can be found in the alpine regions of Europe and loves lime-rich soils. It is hardy and can survive frosty temperatures well, making it a robust addition to rock gardens.
