Sowing instructions

The cultivation of Anchusa officinalis, also known as common ox tongue, begins with the correct sowing. The seeds should be sown directly into the open ground in spring, from April. Choose a sunny location with well-drained, sandy soil. Loosen the soil well and distribute the seeds evenly. Cover them only lightly with soil, as they are light germinators and therefore need light to germinate. Keep the soil evenly moist during the germination phase, but avoid waterlogging. Germination usually takes place within 2-3 weeks.

Tips and tricks

Anchusa officinalis loves sunny spots and thrives best in well-drained soil. Regular watering, especially during dry periods, promotes healthy growth. To prolong the flowering period, you can regularly cut off faded stems. If you want to prevent self-seeding, you should remove the seed heads in good time. It is also advisable to plant the plant in groups, as it will develop a denser and more attractive habit.

Worth knowing

Anchusa officinalis is not only an eye-catcher in the garden, but also a valuable bee pasture. The blue-purple flowers attract numerous insects and support biodiversity. The plant is hardy and perennial, which means you will be able to enjoy it for many years. Originally from the Mediterranean region, it is robust and adaptable. In addition to its role as an ornamental plant, Anchusa officinalis is also valued in naturopathy, for example for healing wounds and treating skin diseases.
