The variety Ocimum basilicum "A foglia di lattuga" is a special basil with large, wavy leaves reminiscent of lettuce. Its intense, sweet and spicy aroma makes it a popular ingredient in Mediterranean cuisine. With these seeds, you can easily grow your own fresh basil in the garden, on the balcony or on the windowsill.
Sowing instructions
Basil is a heat-loving herb and thrives best at temperatures above 18 °C.
- Sowing timeFrom March on the windowsill, from May directly outdoors
- Location: Sunny, warm, sheltered from the wind
- Floor: Loose, rich in humus, well-drained
- SowingFlat in seed trays or directly in the bed (light germinators - do not cover with soil)
- Germination period7-14 days at 20-25 °C
- Plant spacing: 25-30 cm
Keep the soil moist at all times, but avoid waterlogging. As soon as the seedlings are strong enough, they can be transplanted outdoors or into larger pots.

Fresh basil will keep longer if it is placed in a jar of water or carefully stored in a damp cloth in the fridge.
Tips and tricks
- Basil does not like cold feet - it is best to water with lukewarm water in the morning.
- Avoid flower formation: Regular harvesting keeps the herb aromatic and bushy.
- Ideal as a mixed crop with tomatoes - basil protects against pests and promotes growth.
- No direct midday sun for young plants - otherwise sunburn may occur.
Worth knowing
The name "A foglia di lattuga" means "with lettuce leaves" in Italian - a reference to the exceptionally large, soft leaves of this basil variety. Basil has been prized for centuries for its digestive and anti-inflammatory properties. It is also a symbol of love and prosperity.
