The "Burpees Golden" beet is an unusual variety with bright orange skin and intense golden yellow flesh. It impresses with its mildly sweet taste without the earthy note that many classic beet varieties have. It retains its color even after cooking, making it a visual highlight in salads, soups and other dishes.

Sowing instructions

Sow directly outdoors from April to June. Choose a sunny to semi-shady location with loose, humus-rich soil. Before sowing, it is advisable to soak the seeds in lukewarm water for around 12 hours to speed up germination.

  • Seeding depthapprox. 2-3 cm
  • Row spacing: 30-40 cm
  • Plant spacing: 10-15 cm

Keep the soil evenly moist during the germination phase. The first seedlings will appear after about 7-14 days. Separate weak plants in good time to encourage strong roots.

Harvest, use & storage

Golden beet is ready to harvest around 50-70 days after sowing. Young tubers are particularly tender and taste great raw in salads. More mature beetroots are ideal for steaming, roasting or preserving.

The leaves of the "Burpees Golden" are also edible and have a taste reminiscent of Swiss chard. They can be used like spinach.

For longer storage, the tubers should be kept in a cool, dark place. Remove the foliage about 2 cm above the tuber to prevent it from drying out.

Tips and tricks

  • Loose, deep soil prevents deformed roots.
  • Regular watering promotes even growth, but avoid waterlogging.
  • A mixed crop with onions or beans can reduce pest infestation.
  • The golden color remains even when cooking - perfect for colorful dishes!

Worth knowing

The "Burpees Golden" originally comes from the USA and was cultivated for its unusual color and sweet taste. Unlike classic beet, it does not bleed when cut, which makes it particularly popular for creative cooking ideas.
