Sowing instructions

Growing Capsicum frutescens "Bird's Eye" is uncomplicated and ideal for anyone who loves hot chilies. Start sowing in late winter or early spring. Use small pots or seed trays filled with high-quality potting compost. Press the seeds lightly into the soil and cover them with a thin layer of soil. Important: Keep the soil evenly moist, but avoid waterlogging. Germination is best at a constant temperature of 25-30 °C. A heated greenhouse or windowsill with plenty of light is perfect.

Harvest, use & storage

After around 10-12 weeks, you will discover the first flowers on your plants. From June to October, you can harvest the bright red, small chilies. The heat level of the "Bird's Eye" is intense - perfect for hot sauces, curries or for drying and grinding as chili powder. Freshly harvested chillies can be stored in the fridge for several weeks, or you can dry them to preserve them for many months.

Tips & Tricks

Capsicum frutescens loves the sun - a full sun location promotes growth and the pungency of the fruits. Make sure that your plants are watered regularly, but avoid waterlogging. Occasional fertilization with a potassium-rich fertilizer supports a rich harvest. When the nights get cooler, you can also bring the plants indoors in pots to extend the harvest time.

The heat level is between 100,000 and 225,000 Scoville units - so it's not for the faint-hearted!
