Aquilegia atrataalso known as Black columbineis a fascinating and rare herbaceous perennial, which with its dark purple to almost black flowers creates a special accent in the garden. This perennial plant has an elegant, upright habit and attracts everyone's attention with its unique flower color. Aquilegia atrata prefers shady to semi-shady locations and is perfect for Cottage gardens, natural gardens and shade gardenswhere it harmonizes with other plants and lends a mysterious charm.

Sowing instructions

Sowing time: Spring to fall (March-August)
Germination period: 2-4 weeks at 18-22 °C
Seeding depth: Light germinator - Press the seeds only lightly and do not cover with soil
Substrate: Permeable, rich in humus, slightly moist
Location: Semi-shady to shady, preferably cool places in the garden
Pouring: Keep evenly moist, avoid waterlogging
Planting distance: Approx. 30 cm between the plants

The Black columbine (Aquilegia atrata) is a rarer species of the columbine family and originally occurs in the Alps and Pyrenees before. Its deep dark, almost black flower color distinguishes it from the usual, lighter columbine species and makes it an exclusive plant for the garden. In symbolism, columbine is regarded as a sign of Devotion and Tenderness. The Aquilegia atrata has also proved to be robust and frost-hardy which makes it a low-maintenance choice for gardens in different climates.
