The Picea pungens glauca "Kaibab"also known as Blue spruce Kaibabis an impressive, evergreen conifer with an intense bluish needle coloration. This particular cultivar originates from the high altitudes of North America and is characterized by its extreme frost hardiness and uniform, conical growth. With the right conditions, you can cultivate an impressive tree from these seeds for gardens, parks or as a privacy screen.
Sowing instructions
The germination of Picea pungens glauca "Kaibab" requires some patience, but with the right steps you can achieve the best results:
- StratificationThe seeds should be left for approx. 3-6 weeks at 2-5°C in the refrigerator pre-soak in damp sand or a damp cloth.
- Sowing time: The best time for sowing is the Spring (March-May) after stratification.
- Substrate & locationUse a well-drained, nutrient-poor soil (e.g. potting compost with sand). A bright, but not full sun position is ideal.
- Sowing techniqueCover the seeds lightly with soil (approx. 0.5 cm deep) and keep evenly moist.
- Germination periodGermination takes place after 4-8 weeksdepending on temperature and humidity.
Harvest, use & storage
As soon as the young plants reach a size of approx. 15-20 cm have been reached, they can be transplanted into larger pots or directly into the open ground. The Picea pungens glauca "Kaibab" is suitable as:
- Solitary ornamental plant for gardens and parks
- Privacy screen and windbreak hedge
- Christmas tree with unique blue coloration
Seeds can be stored in a dry and cool place in an airtight container for up to some years be stored.

Patience pays off - some seeds only germinate after several months.
