Sowing instructions:
Sowing real buckwheat is a straightforward process that even beginners can easily manage. Here are a few simple steps to get you started:
- Choice of locationChoose a sunny location with well-drained soil. Buckwheat thrives best in loose, humus-rich soil.
- Preparation of the floorLoosen the soil with a garden hoe or spade to achieve a fine crumbly structure. Remove weeds and large stones.
- Sowing timeThe best time to sow buckwheat is in spring, as soon as there is no longer any risk of frost. The exact time varies depending on the climate and region.
- Sowing methodSprinkle the buckwheat seeds evenly over the prepared area and cover them lightly with soil. Press the seeds down lightly to ensure good soil contact.
- IrrigationKeep the soil evenly moist, but not wet, until the seeds germinate. After germination, buckwheat only needs occasional watering.
- CareRemove weeds regularly to give the buckwheat enough space to grow.
Tips and tricks:
- Companion plantingBuckwheat is an excellent companion plant for other vegetables in the garden. Its flowers attract pollinators and thus promote diversity in the garden.
- Harvest timeHarvest the buckwheat as soon as the seeds are ripe and can be easily detached from the plants. This usually happens 10-12 weeks after sowing.
- Versatile useThe uses for buckwheat are almost unlimited. You can grind the seeds into flour and use them for gluten-free baking, make them into muesli or porridge or enjoy them as a side dish to savory dishes.
- Soil improvementAfter harvesting, you can simply work the plant residues into the soil to improve the soil structure and add organic matter.
Worth knowing:
- Gluten freeContrary to what its name suggests, buckwheat is gluten-free and therefore an excellent alternative for people with gluten intolerance or coeliac disease.
- Rich in nutrientsBuckwheat is rich in protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals such as iron, magnesium and zinc. It is therefore a healthy addition to a balanced diet.
- Environmentally friendlyBuckwheat is a bee-friendly plant that contributes to the preservation of biodiversity. Its deep roots also improve soil structure and fertility.
