Sowing instructions
Sowing Hypericum calycinum, better known as "Rose of Sharon", is child's play and will give you a lot of pleasure. Choose a sunny to semi-shady location with well-drained soil. In spring, after the last frost nights, you can sow the seeds directly outdoors. Press the seeds lightly into the soil and keep them well moist, but not wet. After about 2 to 3 weeks you will see the first sprouts. Alternatively, you can pre-grow the seeds on the windowsill in late winter. Make sure to acclimatize the seedlings slowly to the open air before planting them in the bed.
Harvest, use & storage
Once the 'Rose of Sharon' is in full bloom, you can admire its bright yellow flowers and decorative foliage. This perennial plant is ideal as a ground cover, as it grows densely and keeps weeds at bay. The flowers magically attract bees and butterflies, making it a valuable addition to your garden. Although Hypericum calycinum is not suitable for consumption, you can use the flowers as an ornamental for bouquets or dried arrangements. Harvesting in the classic sense is not necessary, as it is a purely ornamental plant. Its seeds can be dried and stored in a cool, dark place if you want to sow them again next year.
Tips & Tricks
Hypericum calycinum is extremely easy to care for and robust. It copes well with drought and requires little water once it has grown. In spring, you can prune the plant back vigorously to encourage denser growth. It is also hardy and can survive cold winters without additional protection. If you want your plant to develop particularly well, give it a slow-release fertilizer in spring.
Worth knowing
The "Rose of Sharon" is not only a pretty ornamental plant, but also extremely hardy. It is ideal for difficult locations, such as stony soils or slopes. The plant originates from the Mediterranean region and can even withstand temperatures as low as -15°C without any problems. Hypericum calycinum grows quickly and forms dense carpets in a short time, making it a popular ground cover in many gardens.
