Sowing instructions

Centaurium erythraea seeds, also known as centaury, are particularly easy to care for and are ideal for garden lovers and nature enthusiasts. To sow the seeds, first prepare a well-drained soil, ideally in a sunny to semi-shady location. The seeds should be sown directly into the open ground in spring or fall. Scatter the seeds thinly over the prepared area and cover them only lightly with soil, as they are light germinators. Keep the soil evenly moist, but avoid waterlogging. The first seedlings should appear after about 2-3 weeks.

Tips and tricks

• Use a fine spray bottle to keep the soil moist without washing away the tender seeds.
• If you want to propagate indoors, use seed trays and place the seedlings outdoors after the last frost.
• Centaury is quite undemanding, but benefits from occasional, moderate fertilizing with organic fertilizer.
• To prolong the flowering period, remove faded flowers regularly. This also encourages self-seeding and ensures that the plant will flower again the following year.

Centaurium erythraea belongs to the gentian family and is an annual to biennial plant. It reaches a height of 10-50 cm and forms delicate, pink flowers that bloom from June to September. It also attracts numerous beneficial insects, including bees and butterflies, thus helping to promote biodiversity.
