Sowing instructions

Chamaemelum nobile, also known as Roman chamomile, is not only an attractive ground cover, but is also valued for its healing properties and as a tea plant. Here are some important tips for sowing this wonderful plant:

  1. Choice of location: Roman chamomile prefers a sunny to semi-shady location. It is quite adaptable and can also thrive in slightly shady areas as long as the soil is well-drained.
  2. Soil preparation: Prepare the soil well by loosening it and removing weeds and stones. Roman chamomile grows best in slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH value 5.5 to 7.5). If necessary, add some sand or compost to improve the soil structure.
  3. Sowing: The best time to sow Chamaemelum nobile seeds is in spring, as soon as the danger of frost has passed. Spread the seeds evenly over the soil surface and cover them only lightly with soil, as they need light to germinate.
  4. Irrigation: Keep the soil evenly moist after sowing, but avoid waterlogging. A fine spray irrigation is good to prevent the tender seeds from being washed away.
  5. Germination: Germination normally takes place within two to three weeks. During this time, keep the soil moisture constant and protect the seedlings from direct, intense sunlight.

Tips and tricks

  • Regular care: Once the plants have reached a certain size, they require little care. Remove weeds regularly to minimize competition for nutrients.
  • Fertilization: Roman chamomile does not normally require additional fertilization, especially if the soil has been well prepared beforehand. However, if growth stagnates, you can use a light organic fertilizer.
  • Harvest: The flowers of Roman chamomile can be harvested during the flowering period, which is in summer. Cut the flowers in the early morning when the essential oils are most concentrated.
  • Propagation: In addition to sowing, Chamaemelum nobile plants can also be propagated by division in spring or fall. This is a simple method for quickly obtaining a larger number of plants.

Worth knowing

  • Medical use: Roman chamomile is known for its calming and anti-inflammatory properties. It is often used in herbal medicine to treat digestive complaints, anxiety and skin irritations.
  • Tea preparation: The flowers of Roman chamomile are ideal for making herbal teas. A simple chamomile tea can help to calm the nerves and promote sleep.
  • Horticulture: Roman chamomile is not only functional, but also decorative. It forms dense, green mats with pretty, white flowers that look wonderful in herb gardens, between paving stones or as a low ground cover in flower beds.
  • History: The use of Roman chamomile dates back to ancient Egypt and Rome, where it was valued as a medicinal and ornamental plant. Its name is derived from the Greek word "chamai melon", which means "ground apple" and refers to the apple-like scent of the flowers.
