Mexican Chia (Salvia hispanica) - Seeds

Sowing instructions:

Before you start sowing, choose a sunny location where the plant will receive enough light. Salvia hispanica seeds prefer well-drained soil that is moist but not too wet. Start by loosening the soil slightly and removing any lumps. Then scatter the seeds evenly over the prepared area and cover them with a thin layer of soil. Press the soil down lightly to ensure that the seeds have good soil contact.

Keep the soil moist during germination, but make sure that it is not overwatered to avoid rotting. Germination can take around 7 to 14 days depending on conditions and ambient temperature. Once the seedlings have reached a height of around 5 cm, you can thin them out to give the plants enough space to grow.

Tips and tricks:

• Regular watering: Always keep the soil slightly moist, but avoid waterlogging to prevent rotting.
• Fertilization: Chia plants do not need much fertilizer, but a light fertilization during the growing season can promote growth. However, avoid over-fertilizing.
• Mulching: A layer of mulch around the plants can help retain moisture and suppress weed growth.
• Cut: Regular removal of dead leaves and plant parts promotes healthy growth and prevents diseases.

Worth knowing:

Salvia hispanica, or chia, is known for its rich omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, protein and antioxidants. These small seeds were prized as a superfood by the ancient Aztecs and still have a firm place in healthy diets today. The plant itself is a member of the mint family and produces pretty blue flowers that are not only beautiful to look at, but also attract bees and other pollinators.
