Sowing instructions

The seeds of Cichorium intybus "Palla Rossa 3" thrive best in loose, well-drained soil. You should start sowing between April and July, either directly in the open ground or in pre-cultivation. The sowing depth is about 0.5 cm. Keep a row spacing of approx. 30 cm so that the plants have enough space. The first seedlings will appear after about 10 to 14 days. Make sure that the soil always remains slightly moist, but avoid waterlogging.

Harvest, use & storage

"Palla Rossa 3 develops its characteristic red, firm heads after around 70 to 90 days. The harvest period begins in late summer and can continue into the fall. As soon as the heads are tightly closed and beautifully red in color, you can carefully harvest them with a sharp knife. Cichorium intybus "Palla Rossa 3" is ideal for fresh salads, but it also unfolds its slightly bitter, spicy aroma when steamed or grilled. The harvested heads will keep for about a week in the fridge if you wrap them in a damp cloth.

Tips & Tricks

To ensure that the heads colour particularly well, we recommend placing the plants in a cool, sunny location during the ripening phase. A light frost period also gives the radicchio a more intense flavor. If you want to soften the bitter taste, place the leaves in warm water for about 10 minutes before eating. The combination with sweet ingredients such as oranges or honey in the salad also harmonizes excellently and rounds off the flavour.

Worth knowing

"Palla Rossa 3 belongs to the chicory family and is often referred to as radicchio. In addition to its characteristic taste, it is rich in vitamins and minerals, especially vitamin C and potassium. This variety is known for its robust nature and tolerates light frost, which makes it particularly easy to grow. Radicchio is also a great way to add a touch of Italy to your diet!
