Sowing instructions

To successfully grow Allium cernuum, also known as nodding leek or nodding onion, it is best to start in spring. Sow the seeds directly outdoors or in small pots. Press the seeds lightly into the soil and cover them with a thin layer of soil. Keep the soil moist, but not too wet. Germination can take up to 4 weeks, so patience is required. Make sure to place the young plants in a sunny spot, as Allium cernuum loves plenty of light.

Harvest, use & storage

You can harvest the first leaves after about 2 to 3 months. These have a mild onion flavor and are perfect in salads, soups or as a spice in various dishes. The decorative flowers are also edible and add a special touch to your dishes. The onions themselves are harvested in late summer. Once dug up, the onions should be stored in a dry, cool place where they will keep for up to several months.

Tips & Tricks

Allium cernuum is easy to care for and only requires occasional watering, especially during dry periods. Once established, the plant is hardy and can also cope with less ideal soils. If you don't want to use the flowers immediately, leave them to dry - so you can sow the seeds again next year or use them as decoration.

Allium cernuum is not only a culinary enrichment, but also a valuable plant for insects. The flowers attract bees and butterflies, bringing your garden to life. Originally from North America, this plant has a long tradition in natural medicine.
