Sowing instructions

Would you like to grow Allium sphaerocephalum, also known as globe leek, successfully? It's best to start sowing in spring. Choose a sunny location with well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. Place the seeds about 1 cm deep in the soil and keep them evenly moist. Germination can take up to four weeks, so be patient. As soon as the seedlings are strong enough, you can separate them to a distance of about 15-20 cm.

Harvest, use & storage

The beautiful, spherical flowers appear from June and bloom until late summer. You can cut the inflorescences and arrange them fresh in vases or let them dry to create long-lasting dried bouquets. Allium sphaerocephalum is not only decorative, but also a valuable source of nectar for bees and butterflies. The bulbs themselves can be harvested in late fall when the foliage has died back. Store them in a cool, dry place to plant them out again next spring.

Tips & Tricks

For best results, loosen the soil well before sowing and work in some compost. If you live in an area with harsh winters, you should protect the bulbs from frost by covering them with a layer of mulch. Be careful not to overwater the plants, as waterlogging can lead to rot.

Allium sphaerocephalum is not only easy to care for, but also extremely resistant to pests and diseases. It is an excellent choice for rock gardens, beds and borders and gives your garden a striking, vertical structure.
