Sowing instructions

Growing jalapeno seeds is an exciting way to grow your own hot peppers. Start sowing indoors about 8-10 weeks before the last expected frost. Use potting compost and press the seeds lightly into the soil, about 0.5 cm deep. Cover them with a thin layer of soil and keep the substrate moist, but not too wet. A propagation kit with a heating mat and lighting can speed up germination, as jalapenos prefer a soil temperature of 25-30°C. Germination normally takes 10-14 days.

Tips and tricks

Once the plants have developed 2-3 true leaves, you can transfer them to larger pots. Make sure they get enough light, at least 12-14 hours a day, to encourage strong and healthy plants. If you put the plants outside, wait until the night temperatures are consistently above 15°C. Jalapenos need about 6 hours of direct sun per day. Remember to water regularly, but avoid waterlogging. Regular fertilizing with a balanced fertilizer supports growth and fruit formation.

Worth knowing

Jalapenos are not only popular because of their spicy flavor, but also because of their versatility in the kitchen. They can be used fresh, pickled or dried. On the Scoville scale, the spiciness is given as 2,500-8,000 units, which makes them a moderately hot variety. Interestingly, the pungency is intensified by dryness and heat during the growth phase. Jalapenos contain capsaicin, which is responsible for the pungency and offers numerous health benefits, such as boosting metabolism and relieving pain.
