Leontopodium soulieialso known as Chinese resp. Tibetan edelweissis a rare and fascinating perennial from the high altitudes of the Himalayas. This delicate yet hardy plant forms typical silvery, hairy, star-shaped inflorescences that are reminiscent of the well-known Alpine edelweiss - but with a more compact, finer structure. It is ideal for Alpinum, rock gardens and troughsespecially in a sunny, well-drained location.
Sowing instructions
Sowing time: Spring or fall
Germination period: 2-6 weeks at 15-20 °C
Seeding depth: Light germinator - only press down lightly, do not cover with soil
Substrate: Permeable, sandy-gravelly, preferably calcareous
Location: Sunny, well ventilated
Pouring: Moderate - not too moist, but never allow to dry out completely

Flowering time: June to August
Height: 10-20 cm
Use: Ideal for rockeries, trough planting, alpine garden, green roofs
Storage: Store seeds in a cool, dry and dark place
Tips and tricks
Do not plant too rich in nutrients - poor soils promote the typical edelweiss form.
Winter protection only necessary in extremely wet conditionsas the plant is very frost-hardy.
The silvery hairs protect against UV radiation and dehydration - ideal for sunny spots.
Calcareous soil ensures optimum growth and flower formation.
Do not plant too densely - good air circulation prevents rotting.
Worth knowing
Leontopodium souliei originally comes from the High mountain regions of Tibet and China and grows there at altitudes of up to 4,000 m. The plant is botanically very close to the classic Alpine edelweiss, but is finer in structure and less commonly available commercially. Its special appearance makes it a Highlight for alpine plantations and collectors of botanical rarities.
