Sowing instructions:

Cynoglossum officinale, or dog's tongue, is best sown directly in the open ground from April to June. Prepare the soil well by loosening it and removing weeds. The seeds should be sown in rows about 30 cm apart. Cover them only lightly with soil, as they need light to germinate. Keep the soil evenly moist, but avoid waterlogging. Germination usually occurs after 2-3 weeks at a temperature of around 15-20 °C. When the seedlings are large enough, you can thin them out to a distance of around 20 cm.

Tips and tricks:

Cynoglossum officinale prefers sunny to semi-shady locations and thrives in well-drained, calcareous soil. Once established, the plant is relatively easy to care for and drought tolerant. Water during prolonged dry periods to promote healthy growth. To encourage strong branching and abundant flowering, you can lightly prune the tips of the young plants. Regularly removing faded flowers prolongs the flowering period and promotes the formation of new flower buds.

Cynoglossum officinale, the hound's tongue, is a biennial plant from the borage family (Boraginaceae). It is characterized by its distinctive grey-green, rough leaves and purple flowers, which bloom from May to August. The plant has a long history in folk medicine and was traditionally used to treat skin problems and as a wound healing agent. Today it is mainly valued for its decorative flowers in natural gardens and wildflower meadows. However, due to its toxicity to grazing animals, it should not be grown near livestock pastures. Cynoglossum officinale is also a valuable source of nectar for bees and other pollinators, making it an ecologically valuable garden plant.
