The seeds of the Robinia pseudoacaciaalso as Common robinia or Mock acacia are a fascinating way to cultivate this fast-growing and robust tree yourself. Robinia is prized for its magnificent white flower clusters, its bee-friendliness and its hardy wood.
Sowing instructions
The Robinia pseudoacacia has a hard seed coat, which is why a Stratification or pre-treatment is recommended:
- Allow to swell: Pour hot (not boiling) water over the seeds and leave them to soak for 24 hours.
- Alternative: The seeds can also be stimulated to germinate better by mechanical roughening (e.g. with sandpaper) or a short cold period (2-4 weeks in the refrigerator).
- Sowing: Plant the seeds about 1-2 cm deep in a nutrient-poor substrate and keep the soil evenly moist.
- Location: A bright, warm place (approx. 20-25 °C) promotes germination, which starts after 2-6 weeks.
Harvest, use & storage
- Harvest: The ripe robinia seed pods can be harvested in late fall. The seeds are dried and separated from the pods.
- Use: The robinia is often called Ornamental tree, to the Bee pastureas Erosion protection or to the Wood production used. Attention: Seeds and plant parts are poisonous to humans and many animals!
- Storage: The seeds remain germinable for several years in dry, dark and airtight packaging.
