Sowing instructions

Sowing Echium vulgare seeds is easy and requires only a few steps. You should sow the seeds directly outdoors in spring or fall. Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil. Press the seeds lightly into the soil and cover them only thinly with soil, as they are light germinators. Keep the soil evenly moist, but avoid waterlogging. Germination usually takes place within 2-4 weeks, depending on the temperatures.

Tips and tricks

  1. Choice of locationEchium vulgare loves sunny spots and thrives best in poor, well-drained soil. Avoid soils that are too rich in nutrients, otherwise the plant will flower less.
  2. CareOnce established, Echium vulgare is very easy to care for. Water only during prolonged drought. Cut back the faded inflorescences to encourage the formation of new flowers.
  3. PropagationThe plant often self-seeds if the conditions are right. Leave a few inflorescences to allow natural self-seeding.
  4. Pest controlEchium vulgare is relatively resistant to pests and diseases. Slug pellets can be helpful in case of slug infestation.
  5. WinteringIn mild regions, the plant can also overwinter as a biennial or short-lived perennial. In harsher climates, it is advisable to treat the plant as an annual or to use winter protection.

Worth knowing

Echium vulgare, also known as common viper's bugloss, is a robust and attractive wildflower that attracts insects such as bees and butterflies. The blue to purple flowers are not only beautiful to look at, but also a valuable source of nectar. The plant can grow up to 100 cm tall and flowers from June to September. Echium vulgare is an important element in near-natural gardens and wildflower meadows. Originally native to Europe, the plant has spread widely due to its adaptability. The Latin name "Echium" is derived from the Greek word for viper, as the seed shape is reminiscent of a snake's head. This plant was traditionally known in folk medicine and was used to heal wounds and treat skin diseases.
