If you want to grow Cuminum cyminum, also known as cumin, choose a sunny location with well-drained soil. Sow the seeds directly into the open ground in spring, about 1 cm deep and in rows 20 cm apart. Keep the soil evenly moist until the seedlings appear, which can take around 2-3 weeks. Cumin grows best at temperatures between 20-30°C and prefers dry, warm conditions.

Tips and tricks

• Irrigation: Cumin requires moderate watering. Allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings to prevent root rot.
• Weed control: Keep the bed weed-free so that the young plants get enough nutrients and light. Regular weeding is crucial.
• Fertilization: Use an organic fertilizer or compost to keep the soil rich in nutrients. Light fertilization during the growing season promotes healthy growth.
• Harvest: The seeds are ripe when the plant starts to turn brown. Cut off the stalks and leave them to ripen in a dry, airy place. Then remove the seeds from the umbels.

These are often used in cooking, especially in Indian, Middle Eastern and Mexican dishes. As well as being a popular spice, cumin is also known for its digestive and antioxidant properties.
