Sowing instructions
The "Tarim" eggplant (Solanum melongena) is a particularly tasty and high-yielding variety that you can cultivate in your own garden. Growing these eggplants starts with sowing, which should ideally be done around 8-10 weeks before the last frost in spring. You can sow the seeds in seed trays or seed trays. Fill these with high-quality, well-drained potting compost and distribute the seeds evenly. Cover them lightly with soil and keep the surface evenly moist. The ideal germination temperature range is around 22-25°C. Germination takes place after approx. 10 to 14 days.
Once the seedlings have reached a sufficient size, you can transplant them into larger pots or directly into the greenhouse. Note that eggplants need plenty of sun and warmth to thrive.
Harvest, use & storage
Tarim eggplants are ready to harvest around 70-90 days after sowing, depending on the weather conditions and growing location. They have an elongated shape with a size of approx. 10-15 cm. You can recognize the optimal harvest time by the fact that the fruit has taken on a shiny, deep purple color and the skin can be easily pressed in. Cut the fruit with a sharp knife, taking care not to damage the stalk.
"Tarim" eggplants are ideal for various culinary preparations such as grilled, roasted or in stews. Their firm, mild consistency and aromatic flavor make them a highlight in Mediterranean and Asian dishes. Fresh eggplants can be kept in the fridge for around 3-5 days. You can also freeze or pickle them to extend their shelf life.
Tips and tricks
Eggplants are heat-loving, so make sure they get enough sun to grow well. Make sure the soil is loose and rich in nutrients. You can enrich the soil with compost or organic fertilizer before sowing. Regular watering is important, but waterlogging should be avoided. A greenhouse or a sunny terrace are ideal locations for "Tarim".
Worth knowing
"Tarim" is a particularly resistant and high-yielding eggplant variety that is characterized by its high resistance to diseases and pests. It grows both in pots and in the open field and is a good choice for hobby gardeners looking for a stable and easy-to-care-for plant. In addition, eggplants such as "Tarim" are a true superfood and rich in antioxidants that can have a positive effect on health.
