Sowing instructions
Would you like to grow your own Salvia miltiorrhiza Weila®rhiza? Here's how: It's best to sow the seeds in early spring. Choose a sunny to semi-shady location with well-drained soil. Cover the seeds only lightly with soil and keep them moist regularly. You should see the first seedlings after 2-4 weeks. As soon as the plants are stable enough, you can transplant them outdoors. Make sure they are planted about 30 cm apart.
Harvest, use & storage
The roots of Salvia miltiorrhiza Weila®rhiza, also known as red sage, are ready for harvesting after about two years. Carefully dig up the roots in the fall when the above-ground parts of the plant begin to die back. Wash the roots well and dry them in an airy, shady place. Once dried, you can use them to make teas, tinctures or as an ingredient for ointments. If dried well and stored in a dark place, the roots will keep for up to a year.
Tips & Tricks
For a rich harvest, it is worth fertilizing the plants regularly. It is best to use organic fertilizer to keep the plants healthy. Cut the plants back a little in summer to encourage root growth. Make sure to protect the plants from waterlogging, as they are sensitive to too much moisture.
