Origin: Austria
Harvest: 2023
Germination period: approx. 2-4 weeks

You can choose between 5 and 10 seeds!

Sowing instructions: Before you start sowing, it is important to note that Euphorbia lathyris is also known as "common spurge" and has some special requirements.

  1. Time of sowing: The ideal time for sowing Euphorbia lathyris seeds is spring, when there is no longer any risk of frost. Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil.
  2. Preparation of the floor: Loosen the soil thoroughly and remove weeds and stones. As Euphorbia lathyris is relatively undemanding, no additional fertilization is required.
  3. Sowing: Plant the seeds about 1-2 cm deep in the soil and make sure they are evenly distributed. Keep a distance of about 30-45 cm between the seeds to ensure sufficient space for growth.
  4. Irrigation: Keep the soil evenly moist until the seeds germinate. Avoid excessive watering, however, as this can lead to root rot.

Tips and tricks:

  • Beware of self-seeding: Euphorbia lathyris tends to self-seed and can become invasive in some areas. Therefore, regularly remove unwanted seedlings to keep the spread under control.
  • Protection from wind: As the stems of Euphorbia lathyris can grow quite tall and break easily, it is advisable to protect them from strong winds by supporting them if necessary or planting them in areas sheltered from the wind.
  • Handle with care: Note that all parts of Euphorbia lathyris are poisonous and can cause skin irritation. It is best to wear gloves when handling the plant and avoid contact with eyes and mucous membranes.

Worth knowing:

  • Euphorbia lathyris is a perennial plant known for its striking, upright stems and decorative seed capsules.
  • The seed pods of Euphorbia lathyris are often used in dried bouquets and flower arrangements, giving them an interesting texture and structure.
  • In some regions, Euphorbia lathyris is also used as a medicinal plant, although it should be used with caution due to its toxicity.
