The seeds of the European yew (Taxus baccata) are an excellent choice for garden lovers who want to cultivate an evergreen, low-maintenance and long-lasting plant. The yew is ideal for dense hedges, impressive specimen trees or artistic topiary. With a little patience, you can grow a magnificent yew hedge or an elegant tree from the small seeds.
Sowing instructions
The seeds of Taxus baccata require cold stratification in order to germinate successfully. Here are the most important steps:
- Pre-treatment: Soak the seeds in lukewarm water for 24 hours.
- Stratification: Mix the seeds with moist sand or vermiculite and store them for about 3-6 months at temperatures around 3-5 °C in the refrigerator or in a cold corner of the garden.
- Sowing: After the cold phase, you can sow the seeds in well-drained soil in spring or fall. Cover them only lightly with soil (approx. 1 cm).
- Germination period: Germination can take several months to two years, so patience is required. Always keep the substrate slightly moist, but avoid waterlogging.
Harvest, use & storage
The seeds ripen in the fall in the yew's bright red false berries. If you harvest them yourself, remove the pulp thoroughly as it can inhibit germination. The seeds should be stored in a dry and cool place if you do not want to sow them immediately. An airtight container in the fridge works well for storage.
Tips and tricks
- Patience pays off: Yew seeds often only germinate after a long dormant period - don't lose patience!
- Better protection: Young seedlings should be protected from severe frost and direct sunlight in the first few years.
- Choice of location: Yews are shade-tolerant, but will also grow in sunny locations. The soil should be well-drained and slightly calcareous.
- Propagation by cuttings: If you want faster results, you can also root cuttings - this is easier than sowing.
Worth knowing
- The yew is one of the oldest tree species in Europe and can live for several hundred years.
- Almost all parts of the yew plant are poisonous - only the red seed coat (aril) is non-toxic.
- Due to its extreme pruning tolerance, the yew is ideal for topiary.
- Yew wood is in great demand due to its elasticity and hardness, but has been severely depleted by overuse in the past.
