Acer ginnala, also known as fire maple or fire maple, is a beautiful, compact tree with bright red fall color. Its seeds allow you to grow this robust and decorative tree yourself.

Sowing instructions

The seeds of Acer ginnala require a cold period (stratification) in order to germinate successfully. This is how you proceed:

1. Pre-treatment: Soak the seeds in lukewarm water for 24 hours.
2. Stratification: Mix the seeds with moist sand and store them in the refrigerator (approx. 3-5 °C) for 2-3 months.
3. Sowing: After cold treatment, you can plant the seeds in loose, well-drained soil in spring. The sowing depth is about 1 cm.
4. Germination: Keep the soil evenly moist. The germination period is 4-6 weeks, but can vary.
5. Location: Choose a sunny to semi-shady location for the seedlings to develop vigorously.

Harvest, use & storage

The seeds of Acer ginnala ripen in late summer to early fall. As soon as they are brown and dry, you can harvest them.

• Harvest: Collect the winged seeds directly from the tree or from the ground.
• Use: The seeds are mainly used for propagation. Some also use them to grow bonsai.
• Storage: Store the seeds in a dry, cool and dark place in an airtight container. This will keep them viable for up to two years.

Tips and tricks

• Use potting compost with good drainage to avoid waterlogging.
• The germination rate can be increased by soaking the seeds briefly in warm water after stratification.
• Ensure regular but not excessive watering.
• Young seedlings should be protected from heavy frost in the first winter.
• Patience is required: some seeds only germinate after several months!

• The bright red fall color makes it a popular ornamental tree.
• It is often planted as a hedge or solitary tree.
• The fire maple can grow up to 6 meters high, but is also suitable for bonsai cultivation.
