Sowing instructions

  1. Choose the right location: Nicotiana prefers a sunny to semi-shady location with well-drained soil. Make sure the soil is loose and well-drained to avoid waterlogging.
  2. Soil preparation: Loosen the soil thoroughly and remove weeds and large stones. Nicotiana thrives best in humus-rich soil with a neutral pH value. If necessary, add compost or rotted manure to increase the nutrient supply.
  3. Seed procurement: Obtain high-quality Nicotiana seeds from a trustworthy source. Make sure to choose fresh seeds to ensure good germination.
  4. Sowing time: The best times for sowing Nicotiana seeds are in spring or early summer, when the soil temperatures are warm enough. Sow the seeds about 0.5 to 1 centimeter deep in the prepared soil and keep it evenly moist.
  5. Germination and care: Nicotiana seeds can take several weeks to germinate. Keep the seedlings moist and thin them out if necessary to prevent overcrowding. Once the seedlings become stronger, you can carefully transplant them to provide enough space for them to grow.

Tips and tricks

  • Regular watering: Nicotiana plants need regular watering, especially during the growing season. Make sure to keep the soil evenly moist, but avoid overwatering to prevent waterlogging.
  • Mulching: Mulch the soil around the Nicotiana plants with straw, leaves or grass clippings to retain moisture, suppress weed growth and protect the roots from temperature fluctuations.
  • Special care during the flowering period: Nicotiana produces eye-catching flowers in various colors and shapes. Remove faded flowers regularly to encourage the formation of new flowers and also remove wilted leaves if necessary to improve air circulation.

Worth knowing

  • Nicotiana is a genus of plants from the nightshade family (Solanaceae), which also includes tomatoes, potatoes and peppers. It originates from America and was later introduced to many other regions of the world.
  • Although Nicotiana is used for the production of tobacco, many varieties are also popular in gardens for their decorative flowers. However, the plant also has a long history of ritual and medicinal use by various indigenous peoples.
  • It is important to note that tobacco use is harmful to health and is associated with various health risks. If you are growing Nicotiana to enjoy its aesthetic qualities, be aware that the plant is toxic and should therefore be kept out of the reach of children and pets.
