Viola odorata "Queen Charlotte", also known as fragrant violet "Queen Charlotte", is a particularly floriferous and fragrant variety of the fragrant violet. Its deep purple, slightly bluish flowers appear early in the year and exude a beguiling, sweet fragrance. This perennial, hardy plant is ideal for natural gardens, borders and shady spots under shrubs.

Sowing instructions

Sowing Viola odorata requires a little patience, as the seeds need a cold period to germinate.

Sowing time: Fall to spring
Germination period: 4-8 weeks, often irregular
Seeding depth: Light germinators - only press down lightly, do not cover with soil
Planting distance: 20-30 cm
Location: Semi-shady to shady, humus-rich, moist soil
Pouring: Keep evenly moist, but avoid waterlogging
A cold period (stratification) at around 4 °C for 3-4 weeks can accelerate germination.

Harvest, use & storage

The edible flowers and leaves of Viola odorata "Queen Charlotte" can be used in a variety of ways.

Flowering time: March to May, often with a second flowering in the fall
Use: Flowers for teas, syrups, desserts or as edible decoration
Storage: Store dried flowers away from light
The sweet floral taste of the flowers makes them particularly popular in the kitchen.

Pruning after the first flowering can encourage a second flowering in the fall.
Ideal as a ground cover, as the plant reproduces by runners.
Particularly attractive under shrubs or as a border planting in shady beds.
