Sowing instructions: Would you like to grow Glycyrrhiza uralensis, better known as Chinese licorice? Start by soaking the seeds in warm water for about 24 hours. Then plant them in well-drained soil, about 1-2 cm deep. The best time for sowing is in spring, when the soil temperature is between 15 and 20 degrees Celsius. Keep the soil evenly moist, but avoid waterlogging. The first seedlings should appear after about 2-4 weeks.

Tips and tricks: Glycyrrhiza uralensis loves sunny locations, so choose a spot with plenty of direct sunlight. To promote vigorous growth, you can feed the plants with compost or organic fertilizer. Make sure to remove weeds regularly so that the young plants get enough nutrients. As licorice is a perennial plant, it is worth providing it with winter protection, especially in colder regions. A light pruning in the fall helps to promote growth the following year.

Worth knowing: Glycyrrhiza uralensis is not only known for its sweet roots, but also for its medicinal properties. The roots are often used in traditional Chinese medicine and are said to have anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties. It is also a valuable plant for the garden, as it can improve the soil. Its roots can fix nitrogen, making the soil more fertile for other plants. If you are patient, you can harvest and use the roots after 3-4 years.
