Sowing instructions

When you grow Gentiana clusii seeds, you bring a beautiful alpine plant into your garden. This plant, also known as Clusius gentian, prefers calcareous, well-drained soil and sunny to semi-shady locations. Sow the seeds directly into the garden in fall or early spring, about 0.5 cm deep, and keep the soil evenly moist. Germination can take a few weeks to months, so patience is required.

Tips and tricks

• Cold treatment: Gentiana clusii seeds benefit from cold treatment (stratification). Store the seeds in the refrigerator for 4-6 weeks to promote germination.
• Uniform humidity: Keep the soil evenly moist during the germination phase, but avoid waterlogging, which could damage the seeds.
• Planting distance: Plant the seedlings 20-30 cm apart so that they have enough space to grow and do not compete for nutrients.

Gentiana clusii, named after the French botanist Charles de l'Écluse, is known for its bright blue, funnel-shaped flowers that bloom in late spring to early summer.
