Argyreia nervosa, also known as Elephant Creeper or "Hawaiian Baby Woodrose", is a tropical climber that delights with its eye-catching, heart-shaped leaves and large, attractive flowers in shades of purple and white. This fast-growing plant is particularly suitable for exotic gardens and can be used as a climbing plant for pergolas or fences. Please note that Argyreia nervosa should be grown under controlled conditions in some countries.
Sowing instructions
Argyreia nervosa prefers warm temperatures for germination and grows best in a tropical to subtropical climate. The seeds require cold treatment (stratification) to promote germination. You can soak the seeds in warm water for about 24 hours before sowing to aid the germination process.
- Sowing time: Spring to summer (with sufficient warmth)
- Germination period: 10-21 days at temperatures of 20-25 °C
- Seeding depth: About 1 cm in well-drained soil
- Planting distance: 50-60 cm (for good spreading)
- Location: Sunny to semi-shady, warm, well-drained soil
- Pouring: Keep moderately moist, but avoid waterlogging
It is important to be patient with the seed treatment, as the plant is somewhat slower to germinate and develop. Nevertheless, you will experience a magnificent climbing plant over time.
Harvest, use & storage
The plant forms large, smooth seed capsules after flowering, which release the seeds when they are fully ripe. The seed capsules can then be collected and stored for the next season.
- Harvest time: Late summer to fall
- Use: Climbing plant for pergolas, fences or as a decorative climbing plant in tropical gardens
- Storage: Store seeds in a cool and dry place
The seeds of Argyreia nervosa are known for their psychoactive properties and are traditionally used in some cultures. In many countries, however, their use is strictly regulated - find out about local regulations.
