Santolina rosmarinifolia, also known as rosemary santolina, is an easy-care, evergreen perennial that accentuates your garden in summer with its silvery-green, needle-like leaves and yellow flowers. It is perfect for Mediterranean gardens, dry stone walls or as an edging plant for beds and borders.

Sowing instructions

Santolina rosmarinifolia should be sown in spring or fall. The seeds germinate best in warm temperatures. As light germinators, the seeds should only be lightly pressed down and not covered with soil.

  • Sowing time: Spring to early summer
  • Germination period: 14-21 days at temperatures of 18-22 °C
  • Seeding depth: Light germinators - only press down lightly, do not cover with soil
  • Planting distance: 25-30 cm
  • Location: Sunny, well-drained soil
  • Pouring: Keep moderately moist, avoid waterlogging

Young plants need a certain amount of time to establish themselves, but will reward you with a long flowering period and a robust growth habit.

Harvest, use & storage

Santolina rosmarinifolia forms small, bright yellow inflorescences in summer, which are an important source of food for bees and butterflies.

  • Harvest time: Summer (flowering time)
  • Use: As an ornamental plant in flower beds, as a hedge plant or in dry stone walls
  • Storage: Store seeds in a dry and cool place, ideally in an airtight container

The dried flowers can also be used in wreaths or dried bouquets, and the leaves offer a pleasant fragrance reminiscent of rosemary.

Tips and tricks

  • Cut the plant back after flowering to encourage growth and maintain a compact habit.
  • Santolina is ideal for dry, hot locations as it copes very well with drought.
  • The plant can also tolerate light pruning in winter to keep it in shape and increase its flowering.
  • Ideal for Mediterranean gardens or as a low-maintenance edging for flower beds and paths.

Worth knowing

Santolina rosmarinifolia originates from the Mediterranean region and is particularly resistant to drought. It is an excellent choice for xeriscaping and gardens with little irrigation. Its silvery leaves and yellow flowers make it a very decorative plant that brings the charm of Mediterranean landscapes into your own garden.
