Sowing instructions

The cultivation of Hippophae rhamnoides-Seeds, also known as sea buckthorn, are an exciting project for any gardening enthusiast. The seeds should be sown in the fall or spring, as they need a cold period to germinate. To promote the germination process, it is best to put the seeds in the fridge for a few weeks (stratification). You can then sow them in potting compost and cover them lightly with soil. Keep the substrate evenly moist, but avoid waterlogging.

Tips and tricks

Sea buckthorn is a sun worshipper, so choose a location with plenty of light. The plant prefers well-drained, sandy soil, but is generally quite undemanding and adaptable. When planting, you should bear in mind that sea buckthorn is dioecious - so you need male and female plants to produce fruit. If you want to be on the safe side, it's best to buy plants that have been sexually identified. Sea buckthorn has deep roots, so don't plant it too close to other plants or buildings.

Worth knowing

Hippophae rhamnoides is not only a decorative plant, but also a valuable source of nutrition. The bright orange berries are rich in vitamin C and antioxidants. They are often used in juices, jams and as a food supplement. Sea buckthorn is also an important soil protection plant, as it prevents erosion and enriches the soil. It is also resistant to pests and diseases, making it a low-maintenance choice for any garden.
