Sowing instructions

To grow Papaver somniferum "Hungarian Blue Bread" seeds successfully, you should sow the seeds directly outdoors in spring. This poppy variety prefers well-drained soil and a sunny location. The seeds are only lightly covered with soil as they are light germinators. Keep the soil moist, but not too wet, until the seedlings appear. Germination usually occurs after 10-14 days. Make sure to space the young plants about 25-30 cm apart to give them enough room to grow.

Tips and tricks

For optimal flowering, you should prepare the soil well before sowing by loosening it and possibly adding some sand or gravel to improve drainage. Regular but sparing watering is crucial, especially during the growth phase. Poppy plants are relatively undemanding, but they benefit from occasional fertilization with a phosphorus-rich fertilizer to encourage flowering. Cut off wilted flowers to encourage the plant to produce more buds and prolong the flowering period.
