Sowing instructions

Hyssopus officinalis, also known as hyssop, is a perennial plant that is ideal for your herb garden. For best results, sow the seeds in spring. Choose a sunny location, as hyssop prefers full sun. Prepare the soil well by loosening it and removing weeds. Sprinkle the seeds thinly on the surface and cover them lightly with soil. Keep the soil moist, but not too wet, while the seeds germinate. Germination usually takes 14-21 days.

Tips and tricks

Hyssop is easy to care for, but there are a few tricks to get the best out of your plants. Regular pruning encourages bushy growth and prevents the plant from becoming woody. Use a liquid fertilizer during the growing season to strengthen the plant. Once established, hyssop is quite drought tolerant, but an occasional watering during long dry spells won't do any harm. You can also grow hyssop in pots or planters, making it a flexible addition to a balcony or patio.

Hyssop is not only a decorative plant with attractive, blue-purple flowers, but also a useful medicinal and aromatic plant. The leaves can be used fresh or dried as an aromatic ingredient in soups, salads and meat dishes. Hyssop is traditionally used to relieve coughs and respiratory problems. The plant also attracts bees and butterflies, making it a valuable addition to your garden. Hyssop can grow up to 60 cm tall and flowers from June to September.
