Sowing instructions

Sowing Mesembryanthemum crystallinum, also known as ice plant, is easy and rewarding. Start in spring when temperatures are consistently above 10°C. Fill a seed tray or pots with well-drained potting compost. Sprinkle the seeds evenly over the surface and cover lightly with a thin layer of soil. Carefully sprinkle the soil with water to maintain moisture, but avoid waterlogging. Keep the seeds in a bright place, ideally at a temperature between 18-20°C. Germination usually takes place within 7-14 days. As soon as the seedlings are strong enough, they can be transplanted outdoors or into larger pots.

Tips and tricks

1. Ice plant loves sunny locations and thrives best in sandy, well-drained soil.
2. Water sparingly, as the plant is adapted to dry conditions and too much water can cause root rot.
3. Fertilize sparingly, as Mesembryanthemum crystallinum prefers nutrient-poor soil.
4. Cut the plants back to encourage bushier growth.
5. Iceweed can also be used as a ground cover to suppress weed growth and stabilize the soil.

The plant is known for its fleshy leaves covered with tiny, crystal-like cells that glisten in the sun and make a fascinating sight. These cells store water, which helps the plant to survive in dry environments. Iceweed is edible and has a slightly salty taste, which is why it is often used in the kitchen for salads and as decoration. It is also an excellent plant for rock gardens and Mediterranean gardens as it is drought-resistant and requires little care. The flowering period extends from spring to summer, with the plant producing small, white to pink flowers.
